TRINITY iv
THE gift of the Holy Ghost closes the last gap between
the life of God and ours. Our Father and Maker certainly underlies
and sustains our existence at every point, and yet an impenetrable veil
hides him from us. The veil has no thickness, and yet we cannot see
through it; his life is his, and our life is ours. The Son of God
steps through the veil, clothed in our nature; he becomes one of us, he
takes his place beside us in this very sacrament. Nevertheless the
more Jesus Christ is revealed as a man, the more distinct he is from us,
for each of us is another man. But the Holy Ghost is given by the
Father and the Son to be our very soul. When we allow the love of
God to move in us, we can no longer distinguish ours and his; he becomes
us, he lives us. It is the firstfruits of the Spirit, the beginning
of our being made divine.
